The Nebraska Golden Sower Award is a literary award chosen by students in Nebraska schools. Named after the statue on top of the State Capitol Building in Lincoln, Nebraska, this award helps sow the seeds of reading throughout our State. Each year, teachers and librarians choose 10 nominees in each of three categories: Primary picture books for Kindergarten through Grade 3; Intermediate chapter books for grades 4 through 6; and, Young Adult chapter books for grades 7 through 12. Click on the blue box above for a link to the Golden Sower Award website for more information on this year's nominees.
I will read the 10 Primary Nominees to all the students in Kindergarten, First, Second, and Third grades during library beginning in January. We will discuss each book and complete an activity related to the story. Students will then vote for their favorite book in early April and I will send their votes to the Golden Sower Committee in Lincoln. Votes from all Primary-age students in the state will be tallied, and the winner will be chosen. The winner is announced in early May.
The Intermediate books can be checked out in the library by 4th through 6th grade students to read on their own. In order to vote for their favorite book, a student must read at least four of the nominees. The Intermediate Nominees are also read for the District-wide Operation Read competition held in May of each year. Students in 4th through 6th grade who read four of the Intermediate Nominees can try out for the competition. Students work together in teams of 3 to 5 people to answer questions about the 10 books. Last year's competition was attended by approximately 300 students from the District. One of our four teams made it through the first two rounds of questioning to compete in the final round. Although they did not win, they were excited to represent all the students at Birchcrest. Check out the photos from the 2013 competition on the attached page.
